Iran ranks second in the consumption of “antibiotics” in the world

According to Fars News Agency’s health group, Amitis Ramezani, an infectious disease specialist and member of the Pasteur Institute’s academic staff and the secretary of the Iranian Infectious Diseases Association, answered the question of what diseases antibiotics are used in the treatment of the disease in the health network pulse program. Antibiotics are prescribed in diseases caused by bacteria, such as streptococcal purulent sore throat.

He reminded: Viruses are the cause of colds and they do not need antibiotic treatment.

The full professor of Iran’s Pasteur Institute said: Due to the spread of Corona and high protection during the past two years, the resistance and immunity of the body against various viral diseases has decreased, and we are currently facing the spread of colds and influenza.

This infectious disease specialist said: When suffering from viral diseases, such as colds, the course of the disease should be followed naturally. Of course, apart from influenza, in certain cases, special antiviral medicine for influenza is used.

He said: The treatment of colds is usually symptomatic and the use of painkillers, plenty of fluids, antihistamines and rest are the only recommendations of the doctor and the use of antibiotics is unnecessary and not only does not help the treatment but also adds problems.

Ramezani said: the unnecessary use of antibiotics may mislead the doctor in diagnosing the disease, the most important issue in medicine is the correct diagnosis of the disease and it requires a specialized medical view to be able to distinguish the symptoms of a cold from similar symptoms in other diseases. Without the use of antibiotics by the patient, the diagnosis of the disease will be disturbed.

He said: People do not have problems with colds and flu, these diseases get better by themselves, we have kept antibiotics for serious infections; such as brain infection, brain abscess, heart infection, pneumonia, etc.)

He reminded: If we make bacteria resistant to drugs by excessive use of antibiotics, we will not have any tools to treat infections in the future.

“We prefer to treat infections with cheaper, simpler, more readily available antibiotics that have a smaller and more limited spectrum of action,” noted the secretary of the Infectious Diseases Society. We don’t want to give strong, broad-spectrum antibiotics, because then we will have many negative effects; Our preference is to use antibiotics for serious infections, because if a person has a serious infection, these drugs will not be effective and the person will be led to danger and even death.

In response to the question, what are antibiotics and what do they do, and what will their indiscriminate use bring to mankind?, the expert of the program said: Iran has the second place in the world in the consumption of antibiotics, and the consumption of antibiotics is 16 times the world standard. There are in the country.

Regarding the dos and don’ts of taking antibiotics, he said: the timing of taking antibiotics is very important, because if you don’t take them on time, the blood level of the antibiotic will drop and it won’t have any effect on the treatment. So that not taking antibiotics will be much better than taking them irregularly.

The member of the scientific faculty of the Pasteur Institute of Iran reminded: Every antibiotic is prepared for a specific disease and one should not change the dose of the drug or take it with another type of antibiotic in the hope of increasing its effect.

Ramezani emphasized: sometimes the simultaneous use of antibiotics with some drugs causes drug interactions and causes a lot of problems for the person; Therefore, it is necessary to inform your doctor about the use of your medications when prescribing antibiotics.

He advised: People should refrain from insisting the doctor to prescribe antibiotics, because with the unnecessary use of antibiotics, such as the use of antibiotics during colds and flu, the sensitivity of bacteria to the drug will be lost and drug-resistant bacteria will be created.

A member of the scientific faculty of the Pasteur Institute of Iran stated: If it is necessary to use it in later periods, the microbe will show resistance to the treatment and the doctor will be forced to prescribe stronger antibiotics.

Ramezani reminded: This is why the world has moved towards limiting the use of antibiotics, because in the future we will not have any drugs to treat new and deadly infections.

This infectious disease specialist emphasized: Prescribing antibiotics in children and the elderly should be done with more care and attention.

In response to the question of whether antibiotics can be prescribed during pregnancy, he said: In case of infection in a pregnant mother, there are safe antibiotics that doctors should prescribe.
