Iraq seeks to buy advanced drones and artillery from France

According to Fars News Agency’s International Group, Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Mohammadi, commander of the Iraqi Army’s ground forces, spoke in an interview about arms deals for the purchase of advanced drones and artillery from France.

In an interview with the official Iraqi news agency (WAA), he said that the Iraqi ground force makes up more than 72% of the military force and therefore needs new advanced equipment and tools.

Qasim al-Mohammadi said that the United States has so far delivered some equipment, artillery and a large number of Abrams tanks to the Iraqi army. Russian T-70 tanks are also found in large numbers in the Iraqi ground forces, and the army is now seeking to increase equipment as well as increase the number of brigades and divisions to expand its capabilities.

The commander of the Iraqi army said that many arms deals have been signed with other countries, including the purchase of advanced reconnaissance drones capable of flying for 30 hours from France. Also, advanced artillery will soon enter Iraq from France with high targeting accuracy and strikes.

According to him, night-vision weapons and various other types of weapons are among the new purchases of the Iraqi army, some of which have entered Iraqi ports and will be delivered to the Iraqi armed forces soon.

“There is a lot of competition between East and West to prove their ability, and we, as the armed forces, see the diversification of imported resources as beneficial,” Qasim al-Mohammadi added. “At the same time, various plans are being implemented to empower the army and self-sufficiency in some military items.”

In another part of his speech, he spoke about the security situation in Iraq and said that the security situation is under the control of the military and security forces and ISIL terrorists have to move in the desert areas only by car or motorcycle and can not gather more than six people. They move and take positions with caution and all kinds of restrictions, and the main areas of their concentration are mountains, caves and desert areas, and very far from villages, cities and military places.

The senior Iraqi commander also said that there is a high level of cooperation between the local people and the security forces and the army, and that the only terrorist threat is from the Iraqi-Syrian border, and that the border areas are strategic depths for ISIL terrorists. They live in these areas.

“If we can secure the Syrian-Iraqi border, we will have eliminated ISIS threats by about 80 percent,” Qasim al-Mohammadi added. ISIL is a silent cell operating mainly in the Hamrin Mountains and the desert of western Iraq, where major military operations are still taking place. “But the best way to deal with ISIS is to detect night air and then act quickly using ground and air forces.”

He referred to some terrorist attacks in the form of small nuclei and said that if the military was equipped with advanced equipment, these attacks could be largely prevented.

The commander of the Iraqi Army also said that there is no foreign combat and operational force in Iraq and that all US forces have a training and advisory role, and that security in Iraq is now provided by the army, al-Hashd al-Shabi, the federal police and the counter-terrorism unit.
