Psychological damage to students due to the screening of a horror film in the classroom / 11,000 euros in compensation

According to the Fars News Agency cinema reporter, quoting News 24The parents of a French student have demanded compensation for a horror film shown in class that caused severe psychological damage to their child.

A 13-year-old girl was injured in the classroom during the screening of the horror film “The Ring” and now her parents are demanding 11,000 euros in compensation from the French National Education Department.

The story goes back to 2019. A French teacher from a college in Rhone showed his fourth-year students the horror film The Ring (Le Cercle) as part of the extracurricular program.

According to Le Progrès, one of the students saw the injured film and his parents demanded 11,000 euros in compensation from the French National Education in the administrative court of Lyon on Thursday.

The Ring, directed by American Gore Verbinski, is a remake of a classic Japanese film that tells the story of a cursed tape that kills anyone who sees it. The parents’ lawyer stated that the screening of this film in cinemas is prohibited for children under 12 years of age and is not recommended for children under 16 years of age.

“The 13-year-old schoolgirl was really traumatized after watching the movie in class,” said Mitomas Banags, the family’s lawyer. He could not watch TV alone. He is confined to his home and has experienced social isolation, nervousness, stress and fear.

He added: “The teacher knew very well that this was a horror film, not a fantasy film, and all of this shows the well-proven responsibility of the school and the fault that lies directly with the government.”

As a result, the 13-year-old girl was placed under medical supervision, psychological sessions and hypnosis, and according to a medical certificate prepared by the family’s lawyer, the teenager was in a state of “post-traumatic stress disorder.” He estimates the psychological damage suffered at 11,342 euros.

France has many problems with child protection, and the government has so far failed to meet the demands of the majority of parents. Last month, a French court rejected a lawsuit filed by two child associations seeking to restrict access to some of the world’s largest pornographic websites, citing legal features of a widespread lawsuit to block child pornography sites.

“It must be admitted that there are problems in this area,” Michel Combot, executive director of the Federation of French Telecommunications Companies, told Reuters. “Children’s associations can turn to the French media watchdog to prevent illegal access to sites, and operators can easily do so on a judge’s order.”

“This is not a completely lost battle, and we will try other ways to restrict porn sites,” said Samuel Campbells of e-Enfance, a children’s association.

Child rights groups in France have complained to the country’s top telecommunications companies, hoping to block or restrict children’s access to the top nine porn sites.
