Restoration of economic relations with Turkmenistan under new gas contract / No need for gas dispute with Turkmen

Mansour Moazami, former Deputy Minister of Commerce and International Affairs of the Ministry of Petroleum, in an interview with Fars News Agency, referring to the gas swap agreement between Iran, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, said: “Before reviewing the new gas swap agreement, Increase data and expand Iran’s international relations is defined in the national interest and is a valuable action.

He continued: “Iran has an extraordinary situation in terms of natural resources, and one of these God-given resources is” natural gas “. The volume of the country’s gas resources has made Iran the second largest holder of gas resources in the world, but Iran’s gas production and exports are not in a good position.

* The development of gas trade, in addition to economic benefits, leads to the convergence of countries with Iran

Moazami said: “Gas trade is a two-dimensional issue and in addition to leading to an increase in foreign exchange earnings, it also increases the bargaining power of countries in the international political arena and, in a way, brings convergence and political interdependence.”

The former Deputy Minister of Commerce and International Affairs of the Ministry of Petroleum said: “In other words, by expanding the gas trade, Iran can make a country dependent on its gas resources, which is valuable because it creates political dependence for the other side.” When a country becomes dependent on the gas trade with Iran, in its political, economic and even social relations, it tries not to offend Iran so that it does not have problems in meeting its needs through Iran.

He added: “Energy trade is one of the categories that in addition to meeting the foreign exchange needs of the country, from a geopolitical perspective also leads to strengthening Iran’s political power.” So far, no matter how far behind the development of the energy trade, especially gas, and the setbacks, it means that we have wasted opportunities. There were opportunities for Iran to develop gas trade in the past, but for some reason we did not take advantage of the opportunities.

* The signing of a new gas contract was a happy event that should continue

Moazami said: “The conclusion of the gas swap agreement between Turkmenistan, Iran and Azerbaijan is a happy event, and I thank the Ministry of Oil for its contribution as an oil expert, and I hope that the scope of these measures in the country will increase.”

The former Deputy Minister of Commerce and International Affairs of the Ministry of Petroleum said: “It may be said that the volume of gas that is swap is small, but that it is not a problem, with the measures that are considered, this figure will increase.”

He stressed: Iran’s geographical location is very important from a strategic point of view. In the regional gas market, Iran must become a bridge that conducts gas trade between countries and become a so-called gas hub in the region.

* Restoring economic relations with Turkmenistan was an important step that was taken

Moazami said: “Turkmenistan is highly dependent on foreign exchange resources from gas exports and has a good gas export capacity, and it would be better if Iran becomes Turkmenistan’s export destination.”

The former Deputy Minister of Commerce and International Affairs of the Ministry of Petroleum said: “My ideal is for Iran to buy all of Turkmenistan’s export gas and export it to other countries due to its privileged geopolitical position.”

“Restoring economic relations with Turkmenistan was an important step that was taken,” he said. Turkmenistan is a neighbor of Iran, and we have strengthened our relations with Turkmenistan by concluding a gas contract, and this is definitely in the country’s interest.

* There was no need for a gas dispute with Turkmenistan

“From a political point of view, the relationship between countries and their neighbors is very important, and we must pursue this issue as one of the principles of foreign policy,” Moazami said. I am not saying that we should not communicate with others, but I am saying that a country’s relationship with its neighbors has a special priority, which is currently on the agenda.

The former Deputy Minister of Commerce and International Affairs of the Ministry of Petroleum said: “In my opinion, the 13th government should expand such contracts and agreements and continue its work to interact with its neighbors.”

He added: “In general, Iran’s priority should be to resolve its issues from a diplomatic perspective, instead of appearing in international courts.” You see, right now the Crescent contract has become unbroken and mouth-watering. For example, there was no need to dispute Turkmenistan on this issue.

“When we can have a dialogue with our neighbors, why argue with each other,” Moazami said. Reason tells us that it is better to sit at the negotiating table and reach a conclusion based on the interests of both parties.

* We should not easily miss the opportunities to develop Iran’s gas trade

The former Deputy Minister of Trade and International Affairs of the Ministry of Petroleum said: “In general, considering the gas resources and the special geographical location of Iran, our opportunity to export gas is high and these opportunities should be used and not easily missed.”

In the end, he said: “For example, although Iran has problems in supplying its gas in winter, but in the rest of the days of the year, there is a significant excess gas volume, but why is it not planned?” That is, if we nationalize our vision, we have opportunities that we can take full advantage of.
