Solutions to solve the problem of air pollution in Tehran / electrification of gasoline-burning motorcycles, fantasy or mandatory?

Yousef Hojjat, a university professor and former head of transportation and traffic in Tehran Municipality, in an interview with Fars reporter, about the solution to the problem of air pollution in Tehran, pointing out that the main air pollutant in Tehran is PM 2.5 and this pollutant is more than car exhaust. It is the result of mobility in the city, he said: 50% of air pollution is abrasion and the other 50% is combustion. Thus, 83% of car pollution is generated on the road and only 17% of pollution is generated through exhaust.

Most pollutants are not released from the exhaust

Hojjat did not consider the need to perform technical inspections of cars and install catalysts a concern in Tehran today and added: Most pollutants do not come out of the exhaust. And electrifying cars and motorcycles to reduce air pollution in Tehran is a fantasy solution.

Emphasizing that buses and trucks are the most polluting means of transportation in Tehran, the university professor explained: Diesel naturally produces pollution, but we can provide incentives for better trucks to enter Tehran so that less pollutants enter the city’s air.

Worn-out trucks must pay tolls to enter Tehran

Emphasizing that in order for diesel cars to enter the city, screening must take place and the age-appropriate fleet must enter Tehran, he said: “We must collect tolls from the trucks that enter Tehran based on their pollution.”

Diesel buses should be removed from the Tehran transportation cycle

Hojjat considered it necessary for Tehran to buy new trucks and electric buses and stated: we should remove diesel buses from Tehran’s transportation cycle as much as possible.

Electrifying motorcycles is a big stepping stone

He called the arrival of electric motorcycles a big stone not to hit and said: “Just as we reduced the level of pollution by injecting car engines, our problem will be solved with injector motorcycles.”

Injector motorcycles are problem solvers

Hojjat went on to say that, contrary to popular belief, electric motorcycles are not the solution and injector motors are the solvent for pollutants in this type of transportation in Tehran. , Runs out of charge and its speed is lower than the injector engine and does not meet long distances in Tehran.

He called the electrification of gasoline burners a fantasy idea in general and stressed: But diesels must be electrified.

We have the budget to electrify the bus

This university professor did not consider the lack of funds for the supply of electric buses as logical and said that in our country we easily put several hundred thousand billion in subsidies on private cars, how come we do not have 20 thousand billion tomans to modernize the public transport fleet.

Hojjat did not consider the installation of soot filters as a short-term solution suitable in Tehran and said: “From the beginning, I was not in favor of improving the existing buses, because we are not a poor country and even in these sanctions conditions we can spend our transportation budget on electric buses.” Let’s make a city, until most of our problems are solved.
