Mahmoud Iftikharzadeh, a cardiologist and cardiac arrhythmia, said in an interview with a Fars News Agency health reporter about hypothyroidism and its effect on heart failure: “Thyroid hormone is one of the few hormones in the body that affects all body systems.” Almost all cells in the body are receptors for thyroid hormone, and the heart is no exception, and hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can affect its proper functioning.
He added: “Hypothyroidism can slow the heart rate, make it harder for blood to enter the heart by affecting the heart muscle, increase the pressure inside the ventricular cavity and overshadow the atria.” In this case, the lungs also have problems and the person suffers from shortness of breath, which in close connection with a decrease in heart rate causes heart failure. In addition, hypothyroidism increases vascular resistance. Accumulation of substances in the arteries causes the arteries to not open well, so the volume inside the arteries becomes more than it can accept, which can lead to high blood pressure and, after a while, can lead to heart failure.
“The symptoms of hypothyroidism are nonspecific and can be accompanied by fatigue, weakness and lethargy,” said the cardiologist and cardiac arrhythmia specialist. These symptoms can also occur with age, which is why the symptoms of hypothyroidism are sometimes attributed to aging. The absence of other symptoms should not cause us to neglect thyroid problems, so older people should monitor their thyroid hormones regularly and once a year.
Noting that hypothyroidism is a common disease, Iftikharzadeh said: “About 5% of people have thyroid disease, more than 80% of which is due to hypothyroidism.” Hypothyroidism can be caused by poor nutrition, genetic factors and immune problems. One of the causes of hypothyroidism is low iodine in the diet and iodine has been added to salt in our country for many years, so our compatriots usually do not face iodine deficiency.
Regarding the treatment of hypothyroidism, he said: “Some people have hypothyroidism and on the other hand have coronary artery stenosis that they are not aware of.” Hypothyroidism causes a decrease in heart rate and metabolism, and in the meantime a heart problem is not diagnosed. After seeing a doctor and taking medicine to treat the thyroid, the body’s metabolism and heart rate increase and the symptoms of a heart problem appear, so the treatment of hypothyroidism in the elderly should be done slowly.
“An enlarged thyroid gland can be associated with hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, or even a normal thyroid,” said the cardiologist. Stress does not play a direct role in thyroid disease, but people with hyperthyroidism are restless and easily angered. People with hypothyroidism do not respond well to environmental stimuli, which are sometimes attributed to old age or are confused with Alzheimer’s and depression. These people have hearing loss and mobility.
He stressed: “The doctor should be careful about the dose of hypothyroidism drugs. Sometimes the amount of hormone is prescribed more than the body needs, which can lead to mild hypertension due to the drug, which will lead to cardiac arrhythmias.”
