According to the International Service of Fars News Agency, the Republic of Azerbaijan released 8 Armenian prisoners in an operation mediated by France and the Council of Europe.

According to Reuters, French President Emmanuel Macron and European Council President Charles Michel said Baku’s move was an attempt to facilitate new talks with France and the European Union on the border dispute with Armenia. .

“The release of eight Armenian prisoners by Azerbaijan and the payment of compensation to Azerbaijan have been another sign of positive developments after meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Nickel Pashinyan,” Michel tweeted.

Michel added that the European Union supports stability and prosperity in the region. Macron also said that France sent a plane to the Republic of Azerbaijan to deliver the released Armenian prisoners. Macron also praised the efforts of the country’s diplomats to bring about this transformation.

The State Commission for Prisoners of War and Missing Persons of the Republic of Azerbaijan recently released five Armenian soldiers arrested on November 16 (November 25) in a humanitarian operation. According to the Baku-based government agency, the Armenian soldiers were arrested during clashes in the Kalbajar border region of Nagorno-Karabakh. In the last two months, the Republic of Azerbaijan has released 21 Armenian prisoners of war and returned them to Yerevan.

Baku seeks to facilitate talks on the border dispute with Armenia

Baku and Yerevan experienced a 44-day war over the Nagorno-Karabakh region last year, which ended in a Moscow-brokered ceasefire. Despite the ceasefire between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia, disputes and tensions between the two countries over issues such as demarcation and the provision of roads and crossings have not been resolved.

The Prime Minister of Armenia recently announced Yerevan’s readiness to continue negotiations with the Republic of Azerbaijan and sign a peace treaty with that country. “Yerevan believes that a peace treaty with Baku should be signed, but that the document should be drafted in the negotiation process,” Armenian Prime Minister Niko Pashinyan said at an online press conference.
