Twitter Project Guardian feature to protect popular accounts

Twitter is a social media platform used by several accounts including politicians, celebrities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and so on. Naturally, these users are also prone to coordination attacks such as trolling due to their wider scope. However, Twitter seems to have a system in place to protect these accounts from such activity.

According to Bloomberg, Project Guardian is the name of an initiative that helps thwart coordinated attacks against high-profile user accounts. This is basically a secret list of thousands of employees who are potentially being attacked by other users. Being on this list will follow up on registered complaints quickly. This list includes not only celebrities such as musicians, athletes and politicians, but also users who are involved in the daily drama of Twitter. That way, whenever Twitter receives a complaint from an account on the list, it responds faster than any other complaint.

Joel Roth, Twitter’s head of integration, told Bloomberg that the list does not necessarily include celebrities, it could be any ordinary user caught up in some discussions. After 15 minutes of fame, the user will be removed from the list.
