According to Fars news agency’s health department, Mahdia Salehi, a psychiatrist and member of the academic staff of Iran University of Medical Sciences, answered the question, “What should we do to make waking up in the morning pleasant for the child?” It is very effective for children and teenagers to get up from bed, at this time the child needs time and is sleepy. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to wake up the child, using words like: hello, good morning, dear, wake up, together with caressing, encouragement and persuasion, are considered pleasant ways to wake up the child.
He continued: Pulling aside the curtains to let the sunlight into the room is one of the other ways to alert a child or teenager.
This psychiatrist said: Sometimes we do things that the child’s resistance to waking up continues, such as: hitting, labeling the child as lazy, or that you are lazy! Parents should pay attention: if they have been taught a wrong way, abandon it.
He said: In older children, providing an alarm clock creates a sense of responsibility to wake up, of course, this feeling will not be created all at once and will be formed over time. Parents sometimes support children so much that the child does not accept the consequences of his mistakes, sometimes the child and teenager should be allowed to face the consequences of their actions several times and accept the responsibility for it.
In response to the question of what solutions should be added to the educational method in order to be successful in solving this problem, Salehi said: Parents are advised to use the encouragement table, express the good qualities of the child verbally; Like, how nice of you to get up early, or, how nice of you to say hi! Meanwhile, spiritual gifts are very valuable, such as: hugging the child, taking the child to the park, of course, material gifts from further distances can also be effective.
He said: sometimes the child starts crying and requests not to go to school, parents should not agree in any way, because it causes a habit and they repeat this. Also, protecting the child too much will hinder his growth; For example, if the child is late to school, instead of justifying the delay, inform the school that if they have a special punishment method in this field, they will apply it so that the child takes responsibility for his actions.
This psychiatrist pointed out: the method of punishment by scaring the child and psychologically harming him is never permissible, only depriving the child of a privilege, such as depriving him of a toy, can be considered a punishment, meanwhile, the time of punishment is important and should be take place immediately.
The academic staff of Iran University of Medical Sciences said: To succeed in waking up the child on time, use the encouragement table, pay attention to the child’s sleep hygiene, such as the child sleeping on time, and leave the responsibility of the child to wake up.
He said: “Parents should value house rules, because the principle of legislation is with parents, and one of these rules is bedtime.”
Salehi said: Some issues also cause the child’s resistance to wake up in the morning; Like not doing schoolwork or not liking school, in this case you should find the reasons for these obstacles and problems and take action to fix them.
