Hojat-ul-Islam Mustafa Hosseini Nasab said in a conversation with Mehr about the concept of the word “modesty”: Modesty in the Arabic language in contrast to insolence is used and the Persian equivalent insolence It means shamelessness and modesty means shame. In ethics, modesty is an emotional state that causes one to refrain from doing certain things. It means refraining from doing unseemly things.

Regarding the effective factors in creating modesty, he said: When we examine the verses and religion, modesty can have various factors. For example, the cause of shyness may be the fear of being blamed by others, or it may be the fear of one’s own reputation in a job situation Ash May they all be a form of modesty that does not do it because of a motive. However, when we focus on the verses and traditions, we see that the concept of modesty has not changed, but the origin of the situation is that a person sees himself in the presence of God, he says that because God sees him, he is ashamed to do this. It seems that the meaning of the word modesty in religion is the same, but the difference is in the origin of modesty. That is, instead of fearing one’s reputation or blaming others, the main reason for not doing the desired work should be to see God. So the difference is in the aspect of motivation. For example, Sheikh Mufid has quoted in Amali book page 67 that insolence If it goes with anything, it makes that thing ugly, and modesty goes with anything, it makes it beautiful.

He added: For example, the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, makes a connection between modesty and decency and says that a person who has modesty refrains from doing certain things. If a person is religious, he also finds a divine aspect. When we go deeper into the traditions, we can consider several reasons for modesty. One of the factors that cause modesty is intellect. For example, we have a tradition that a Christian monk asked the Prophet about wisdom. In response, the Prophet considered reason to be the cause of modesty and said that whoever has reason refrains from doing certain things, another factor of modesty is faith, which is stated in a narration of Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) that faith makes a person not to do certain things. .

This religious expert added: social privacy is one of the other obstacles mentioned for creating modesty. We have a narration from Imam Kazem (peace be upon him) who said that whenever you establish a relationship with your friends, you should maintain privacy. If you violate that privacy, your friends will do the things they were ashamed to do. So we conclude that when social privacy is removed and social ugliness is eliminated, the modesty coefficient decreases.

Hosseini Nasab pointed out: Another factor in reducing modesty is need and poverty. In a narration of Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) in the Book of Kafi, Volume 148, it is stated that needing others destroys modesty. So poverty is the opposite of modesty. The third factor is talking too much, and another factor in the loss of modesty in the words of Imam Reza, peace be upon him, is drinking alcohol.

This college and university lecturer went on to say: The principle of modesty is good, but modesty is not always good. For example, shyness from asking for one’s real right causes the loss of the right, and giving up the right is a result of nothing but Jerry Getting wet is not cruel. He clarified: One of the other cases in which modesty is reprehensible is asking questions about something we do not know. Also, modesty is reprehensible in earning halal income, and one should not be shy about earning halal wealth. You should not be ashamed to ask God, and you should ask God for everything. In the narration, you can even ask God for your shoelaces. Another case where modesty is reprehensible is serving the family. It is mentioned in the hadiths that a man was ashamed of serving his family in front of Imam Sadiq, but Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) forbade him from serving his family.

Regarding the role of the government and the people in institutionalizing modesty in society, he said: the government has the role of creating the context and the main work is done by the people. But governance can expand the platforms that strengthen modesty and faith. The more the culture of rationality grows in the society, the higher the modesty. Maybe the government cannot force people to be modest, but it can create the factors that cause modesty in the society and reduce its obstacles. For example, if the government can lower the poverty rate, naturally, it has reduced the barrier of modesty, so we expect the government to discuss modesty.

For example, when the roles defined for women are limited in society, according to the same limited relationships, modesty is defined in religion, but when new roles are defined for women in society, modesty should also be explained in those roles.

As a result, some of the duties are at the disposal of the individuals themselves, some at the disposal of the family, and some duties are related to the government.
