Will the announcement of the readiness of the Chinese investor to launch the urban light train/L.R.T reach Tehran?

Fars News Agency, Shahri Group:In the public transportation system, LRT is referred to as light rail transportation or urban light train, which has been used in some countries for years and citizens use it to travel. These urban light trains have from one to four wagons that travel on the ground and its electronic fuel has made it attract many fans and this public vehicle, like BRT, is considered one of the high-speed systems and between 30 and They also have a speed of 100 km.

Different comments have been made about the use of this type of transportation mode for Tehran with the daily number of millions of passengers, and some city managers have agreed with the implementation of the LRT plan and some have opposed it for some reasons.

The cost of building LRT is a quarter of the metro

About 5 years ago, Mohsen Poursaid Aghaei, Deputy Director of Transportation and Traffic of Tehran Municipality, announced the possibility of replacing BRT with a light fast urban electric train known as LRT.

Stating that the cost of building LRT is a quarter of the metro, he added: “Unfortunately, we went towards the most expensive method possible; It means building the subway. We should pay more attention to LRT.

Necessity of building an L-ART in the 22nd district of Tehran

Ali Abdullahpour, the former CEO of Tehran and Suburbs Urban Railway Operating Company, said about the use of LRT in the public transportation system: In many countries, it is considered as a complement to the public transportation system and as a mass transportation system. Not a passenger. In places where there are restrictions and a subway tunnel cannot be built, LRT can be used.

The former CEO of the Tehran and Suburbs Urban Railway Operating Company continues by saying that LRT has different advantages and disadvantages: the easy movement of citizens with LRT and its easier implementation than the subway are among the advantages of this system. Of course, a corridor should be considered for LRT, and the construction of this corridor covers a large part of the street and creates traffic problems.

He stated: In many countries that have been using LRT for many years, numerous accidents have been seen in the field of collision between vehicles and trains, and this issue is also one of its disadvantages. Of course, every complementary system is valuable in its place, and LRT can be used in places where there is no subway and it is not possible to build a subway due to the high level of underground water.

According to the former CEO of Tehran and Suburban Railway Company, LRT can be used in areas such as 22 and Shahr Aftab to bring many passengers to the subway and bus stations, and the construction costs of this system are much lower than the subway.

Announcing the readiness of the Chinese investor and financier to launch the L.R.T

Regarding this issue, we went to Mojtaba Shafiei, the deputy of transport and traffic of the mayor of Tehran, and he told Fars in this regard: Traffic studies are very important in this regard, the initial ideas about this issue have been raised and expressed, and if the issue is approved by the Supreme Traffic Council, it will be implemented.

Stating that the LRT launch is good and it will be implemented quickly, he said: The cost of launching the LRT is lower than the subway, and the Chinese investor and financier has also announced his readiness in this field, although its implementation is subject to change. It is on the condition that the Supreme Traffic Council approves this issue.

Shafiei said: The budget of the metro network is generally one line and about 55 billion tomans, and if more financial resources are considered for public transportation with the support of the government, we will definitely have better conditions in this area.

The economic justification of LRT is a matter of debate

Ali Asghar Qaemi, a member of the Civil and Transportation Commission of the Sixth Tehran City Council, also said about the use of new modes of transportation in Tehran: There have been talks about launching the LRT, but its economic justification is still a matter of debate.

He continued: These issues have delicate discussions, the efficiency and economic function of which should be discussed in the meetings of the transportation commission of the city council, and if friends from the transportation field have defenses about it, it can be included in the program.

A member of the Civil and Transportation Commission of Tehran City Council stated: A series of opinions about new modes of transportation may be proposed or proposed, but they will be rejected due to economic efficiency and other reasons by conducting expert work. Issues are raised but not resolved.

He pointed out that the new urban management team may consider the use of LRT in the public transportation system and have an operational and economic solution for it, but it has not been discussed so far.

7 Premium Features of LRT

Mirfazel Nikzad, a transportation and traffic expert, who was previously responsible for the bridge and highways group in the Technical and Engineering Advisory Organization of Tehran Municipality, and is in the process of one of the latest studies of Tehran Municipality about LRT, about the importance and necessity of using About this mode of transportation, he said: One of the characteristics of multi-modal transportation is its multi-vehicle nature. No big city in the world can be found without a single means of public transportation. In most of the developed countries, after the main transportation skeleton is built using Mass Rail Transit (MRT), i.e. subway, they go to other modes of transportation. In the meantime, light rail systems are referred to as “metroyar” and LRT is among them. While introducing the big family of light rail transportation, Nikzad explained: This family has various children, including trams, monorails, suspended systems in which the train hangs from the rails, Sky Bus or air bus, driverless systems known as AGT) and wheel and tire systems rather than a rail system which lacks annoying vibrations.

He made a comparison between MRT and LRT and explained in this regard: MRT is mostly underground and sometimes on the surface, but based on feasibility, LRT can be implemented under the surface, at zero level or as an air corridor. On the other hand, metro works with at least 8 cars and LRT does not have more than 3 or 4 cars. While the metro is used to connect different areas of the city to each other, LRT is used to connect one area to adjacent areas, which is mainly used in commercial, tourism and recreational areas. Stating that more than 400 LRT lines have been implemented in different cities of the world until 2011, Nikzad noted that the cost of construction, operation and maintenance of LRT lines is estimated to be between one-half and one-third of the metro.

According to him, by using urban light train, it is possible to move 20 thousand people per hour in each direction on average, which is not a significant amount compared to the capacity of the metro, which is at least two to three times, but at the same time It covers the needs of citizens for local services. In this way, the high capacity of passenger transportation, short time interval, the possibility of exchanging with other modes of transportation and playing the role of “Metroyar” and “Busyar”, the neighborhood operation of this fleet, low cost of construction and maintenance, the possibility of using an underground power supply system instead of cables air and high speed of transportation compared to the bus; Seven premium features of this fleet are public transport.

Will LRT reach Tehran?

LRT (LRT) is one of the public transportation models and its capacity is almost two and a half times that of BRT. This high-speed device is powered by trains with an electronic source. The trains that move in the LRT system are generally about They have a speed of 30 to 61 km/h, but in their advanced models, this speed reaches up to 104 km.

It seems that the new city managers are in favor of launching the LRT in Tehran, but there are two issues before the implementation of this issue, one is the budget and financial resources, and the other is the approval of the Supreme Traffic Council, and now we have to wait and see how this mode of transportation works It is added to the cycle of public transportation in Tehran.
