130 buildings in Tehran prone to metropolitan accidents

According to Fars News Agency’s urban correspondent, Nasser Amani stated in front of the Tehran City Council today on the issue of unsafe buildings: The collapse of the metropolis in Abadan, 6 years after the Plasco incident, shook Iran once again and turned into national mourning.

He said: “In addition to the heavy financial and human costs and the loss of the lives of honorable people, this incident caused dignity and spiritual costs to the city administration, the Arvand Free Zone Engineering Organization and many agencies in the region.”

He added: “This project was one of the joint projects of Abadan Municipality and had not been fully exploited yet, which led to such a fate.”

Amani stated that this incident is a serious alarm for the city administration of Tehran, the council and the municipality, and specified: There are about 130 high-risk buildings in different parts of the city that have the potential to become a metropolis. More than five thousand warnings have been issued, but it does not solve the problem, but the complete danger must be eliminated, and this will not be possible until all the relevant devices make a serious will and decision.

Amani emphasized: After the Plasco incident, a delegation was appointed by the president to present a report. That report was prepared by academic experts fairly and after examining all aspects, but it was forgotten. The subway accident happened because no attention was paid to this report. We need a national report and consensus building.

“Everyone should comment on this incident,” he said. “There should be a national consensus and a national report.” Regarding the Plasco incident, everyone blamed the accident, but the report showed that the lighting of the picnic gas on one floor and its spread to the other floors was the cause of the accident and silenced everyone. People still do not believe that the owner of the metropolis has been declared dead under the rubble and still believe that he has fled the country.

A member of the Islamic Council of Tehran said: Those who want to visit the metropolis must see the Plasco report.

He said that the municipality is obliged to take measures to improve the safety of buildings and reduce the accident rate, adding that continuous monitoring of the safety of high-rise buildings and the submission of an operational plan should be done by the end of the second year. We request that the list of these unsafe buildings be published.

Amani added: “Signs of high-risk buildings should be installed in these buildings so that people know and decide for themselves whether to enter or not.”

Mehdi Chamran, the chairman of the Tehran City Council, stated in response to Amani’s remarks: The Metropol building is different from the Plasco building. The building was not yet completed and collapsed and was more dangerous than the Plasco incident caused by a picnic fire.

Chamran added: the metropolis building did not catch fire and collapsed on its own and this issue should be addressed.
