Jordanian ministers’ emphasis on strengthening cooperation with Syria at the Sharm el-Sheikh meeting


According to the report of the International Economic Group of the Fars news agency, quoted by SANA, the Syrian and Jordanian sides reviewed the aspects of joint cooperation in the field of water, energy and environment yesterday and emphasized the necessity of activating the Jordanian-Syrian joint technical committee for water.

The Jordanian delegation participating in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP2) in Sharm el-Sheikh met with its counterpart from Syria on Wednesday.

In the Wednesday evening statement of the Ministry of Environment of Jordan, it is stated that the Jordanian delegation present at this meeting included Muhammad Al-Najjar, Minister of Water and Irrigation, Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, and Moawiyah Al-Radaideh, Minister of Environment of Jordan and their accompanying delegation.

The head of the Syrian delegation in this meeting was Hossein Makhlouf, the Minister of Local Management and Environment of Syria.

In this meeting, ways of cooperation and integration in environmental fields to reduce the effects of climate change and dust storms were discussed.

In this meeting, the Syrian minister expressed hope that these cooperations will lead to joint work and projects that contribute to the reduction of climate change and dust storms that have repeatedly targeted the region and had a great impact on the environment.

In the context of the economic relations between Syria and Jordan, it is worth mentioning that the volume of commercial exchanges in the joint free zone of the two countries from the beginning of this year to the middle of October has reached 12 thousand tons of different goods worth more than 45 million dollars, according to Irfan Al-Khasawneh, the general manager. This region is considered as a satisfactory and important indicator of the growth of the region and its gradual return to the situation before the Syrian crisis.

The Joint Free Zone of Syria and Jordan was established in 1975 and is located on a land of 6,500 hectares equally between the two sides of Syria and Jordan on the common border of the two countries and near the Nasib Jaber border crossing.

The 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, better known as the Conference of Members of the UNFCCC (UNFCCC) with the abbreviation COP27 (COP27), as the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference from November 6 to November 18, 2022 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt will be held.
