Rising England 64 million people to train 14,500 doctors annually

According to Fars News Agency’s health correspondent, access to medical services in the world has been one of the major concerns of governments. According to studies, Iran is one of the countries with a low per capita ratio of physicians. In Iran, there are only 11.8 active physicians per 10,000 physicians. Therefore, the main solution to eliminate the shortage of physicians is to increase the capacity of physician training in the country. Currently, there is no specific shortage in the country in terms of hospital beds, faculty and educational space. However, the Ministry of Health and the Organization of the Medical System are among the biggest opponents of this increase in capacity. They even deny the shortage of doctors and declare that not only is there no shortage, but the country is facing a large number of unemployed doctors!

According to health experts, the root cause of this opposition is conflict of interest. As the main decision to eliminate the shortage of doctors and break the monopoly of doctors, doctors are in the Ministry of Health. So that even in the 70s, not only did the medical capacity not increase in proportion to the growth of the country’s facilities, but it also decreased by almost half.

In the meantime, the question that arises is how other leading countries in the health system have solved this super-problem?

Iran is the only country in the world that has integrated its health care system into the medical education system. Physicians, on the other hand, are the main decision-makers in determining medical capacity, both in universities and in the Ministry of Health. But in leading countries, the health care delivery system is separate from the medical education system. In a country like the United Kingdom, for example, in recent days the British Medical Association has issued a document calling for a more than 50 percent increase in physician training capacity. To increase the capacity to train physicians in the UK to 65 million and 44 medical schools to 14,500. (It should be noted that Iran, with a population of 85 million and 64 universities and medical schools, trains only 8,000 doctors annually!) In the UK, medical schools do not benefit from reduced capacity because the service delivery system is separate from the medical education system. Therefore, they demand an increase in capacity.
