The Bride of the Mosque Part One

According to an old tradition among Bosnian and Herzegovinian Muslims, the bride and groom first attend the mosque to begin their life together on their wedding day. Bosnian brides like Iran wear white and the ceremony is attended by a cleric (mufti) who recites the wedding sermon.

In ancient Bosnia and Herzegovina (not today), the groom’s uncle or uncle often went to the girl’s house to propose, and the presence of the boy’s parents was exceptional. At the ceremony, the girl was given a ring, pearl or gold coin as a gift, and the gifts given on the day of the engagement were called “trusts”.

During the courtship ceremony, the girl was not consulted in the presence of the suitors, but her parents asked her for her opinion in another room. The girl prepared coffee and syrup if she was satisfied, went to the guest room and entertained them. Then a gift for the boy’s parents and himself, so calledباشچالوکIt was called, it sent.

The two young men saw each other several times from courtship to marriage, but exclusively outside the girl’s house, in a short time and of course with the presence of a child!

In the past, there was often not much distance between courtship and marriage. Weddings were often held on Thursdays or Mondays, and attempts were made to avoid weddings between two religious holidays.

The girl and boy who performed the wedding often chose the white beard, which was the highest position in the ceremony and was often one of their relatives, to run the ceremony. The wedding ring was often given to the girl by the groom’s brother or one of his relatives on the wedding day. Of course, the ring was not given directly to the girl, but to her parents, and they put the ring on her finger.
