Why did the trend of “Thalassemia” in Khuzestan reach the alarming limit?

Yunus Arab, CEO of the Iranian Thalassemia Association, in an interview with Fars news agency’s health reporter, referring to the high number of thalassemia patients registered in the northern and southern provinces, said: In the northern provinces, due to the great efforts made by the Ministry of Health and the people, family marriages have decreased and from In the same way, the birth of babies with thalassemia has also decreased.
He stated that there are still many consanguineous marriages in the southern cities and there is not enough awareness about thalassemia disease and he said: We are trying to control the disease in these areas as well. After getting married, they go to health centers, and if it is diagnosed that the couple has minor thalassemia, they are under the supervision of the health center for having children, or if their disease is not diagnosed and the result of their marriage is a thalassemia patient.
Arab added: “Unfortunately, the birth rate of thalassemia babies in Khuzestan province has reached the alarming limit, and the reason for this is a laboratory error. The laboratory that performs laboratory work in this region does not have enough precision, and unfortunately, Jundishapur Ahvaz University of Medical Sciences, despite warnings.” The thalassemia society sends couples to this laboratory, which has increased the number of patients.
CEO of Iran Thalassemia Association continued: The activity of this laboratory should be stopped to investigate what is the reason for these laboratory errors? On the other hand, due to the large number of patients in this region, the Ministry of Health should designate a government laboratory in this region so that applicants can refer to the government sector and not incur heavy costs.
He continued: This laboratory has announced to a number of couples that they are healthy, and the couple found out at the time of the baby’s birth that the baby is suffering from thalassemia, therefore Jundi Shapur University of Ahvaz and the Ministry of Health should seriously enter into this issue.
Arab added: Currently, the government spends 1 billion tomans annually for thalassemia patients, and the birth of a thalassemia patient entails huge costs for the government.
