According to Fars News Agency’s health group, Afshin Ostovar stated in the meeting of the National Cancer Survey, which was held in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Health: The standardized age incidence of cancer in Iran is 180 for men and 160 for women. It is 100,000 people and compared to the global average, the incidence of cancer in Iran is lower among men and women.

He added: “The pattern of cancer in Iran due to the age, risk factors and urban and modern lifestyle, gradually similar to developed countries.” In terms of numbers, according to the latest statistics of the population-based cancer registration system in the country, about 135,000 cases of cancer occur annually, of which 52% are men and 48% are women.

The most common cancers of Iranian men and women

The Director General of the Office of Non-Communicable Diseases Management of the Ministry of Health noted: The most common type of cancer among Iranian women is breast cancer and among men, prostate cancer. Over time, changes in common cancers, such as prostate cancer, have replaced gastric cancer in men due to changes in lifestyle and diet, but among women, gastric cancer is one of the five most common cancers.

“Unfortunately, the incidence of cancer in the country is increasing,” Ostovar said. Data from 4 years of the population-based cancer registration system in Iran between 1993 and 1996 show that the incidence of cancer in the country has increased from 112 thousand cases per year to 135 thousand cases.

Probability of cancer, death and cancer recovery in Iran and the world

He reminded: among the causes of death, first cardiovascular diseases with 43% and then cancer with 16%, are in the highest rank. The probability of developing cancer for every Iranian during their lifetime is about 14% and in the world is about 20%. The probability of death of every Iranian due to cancer is 7% and 10% in the world and the probability of recovery from cancer in Iran and the world is about 50%.

The Director General of the Office of Non-Communicable Diseases Management of the Ministry of Health said: In Iran, the incidence of cancer is expected to increase by 60% for the next 20 years, while this forecast for the world is about 115%, mainly due to demographic and aging changes. Of course, part of the factors are related to lifestyle and increasing risk factors such as unhealthy diet and smoking, lack of physical activity and obesity.

Cancer is the most expensive disease in the country

“Cancer is very important economically because it is the most expensive disease in the country, and unfortunately about two-thirds of people who get cancer may incur back-breaking costs, which are likely to go below the poverty line,” he said. If we can not work in the field of prevention, there is a risk of bankruptcy of insurance companies as the main financiers of cancer costs.

“The later cancer is diagnosed, the more expensive and less effective it is to treat and control, so the more we invest in cancer prevention, the more effective it will be,” he said. In terms of the effectiveness of interventions and the quality of services provided in the country, the 5-year survival rate of breast cancer in Iran is about 68% and in the United States 90%, in the case of colon cancer in Iran 41% and in the United States 65%.

Early detection of cancer increases the effectiveness of treatment

The Director General of the Office of Non-Communicable Diseases Management of the Ministry of Health, while emphasizing the need for early detection of cancer, said: “The earlier we diagnose cancer, the more effective the treatment will be. Prevention to provide supportive and palliative care, and for this, a national cancer management program has been developed in the country, which is comprehensive and includes 4 main processes and 7 support processes.

Cancer information we have

“One of the important things about health, as well as about cancer, is access to information,” Ostovar said. The information available from the population-based cancer registration system, and if this information did not exist, we would not have a clear path ahead. All the necessary information about cancer incidence, risk factors, geographical distribution of cancer and its risk factors, the most common cancers in countries, is in this information registration system, which is necessary for planning, seeking support and evaluating the implemented programs. Cancer imaging allows us to have enough information and information on incidence, costs, survival, early diagnosis and mortality.

He added: “The priorities for the next four years for cancer management have been prepared in four areas: governance, risk factors, care system and health system.” In the coming weeks, the evaluation of the National Cancer Management Plan in the country will be completed with the participation of stakeholders, including the World Health Organization, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, and the Atomic Energy Organization. .

Develop a national child cancer management program

The Director General of the Non-Communicable Diseases Management Office of the Ministry of Health emphasized: The National Cancer Management Plan for Pediatric Cancers has been developed and the necessary programs and measures in this field have been seen, as well as land planning and the development document of the National Cancer Care Network.
Ostovar announced the update of the clinical guide of three preventable cancers in the country and said: these cancers include breast, cervical and colon cancers. The HPV vaccination program has been prepared in the country and we hope to implement this program with the vaccine produced in order to eliminate cervical cancer as the first cancer that can be eliminated.

He emphasized: The national anti-cancer campaign has been launched with the aim of increasing public awareness and inviting people to self-care in the country. The involvement of NGOs and charities in providing cancer services is very important.
